Public speaking, on the other hand, is terrifying for most people. This is when we need to stand in front of a group of people and present our views, make a speech, or teach. Agoura Christian Counseling can help individuals build confidence in their communication skills.

Public speaking is a scary prospect for most of us because it requires giving ourselves to an audience to be judged in real-time. The fear of rejection and failing is usually at the forefront of why most people shy away from public speaking altogether. This is understandable because not all of us are born with the ability to speak to a crowd.

It can be tough for a variety of reasons. Although it may be nerve-wracking, the ability to speak publicly and communicate effectively is becoming one of the most sought-after skills in the job market, across industries and disciplines.

Tips for effective public speaking

Effective planning

Most of the nervousness we feel before speaking publicly is a result of not planning. As much as you can make sure you know all that needs to be in place for you to give your best. This might mean visiting the venue beforehand to properly plan how you will conduct yourself in that environment. Planning will also include making sure that all your technical needs are taken care of so that you will not be rattled by any technical issues on the day.

Know your material

As much as possible, try to avoid reading but work from an outline. This will mean that you will have to put a lot of effort into knowing and understanding the contents of what you are to present.

This requires you to study and go over your presentation over and over again, so you are aware of the flow of content. Master the introduction, the body, and the conclusion well so you do not lose track. Knowing your material also helps in reducing the feeling of nervousness that comes with public speaking.

Know your audience

Taking time to know the audience before you are to present to them will ensure that you have a successful presentation. The work you are putting out is for them so you must get to know how to effectively communicate with them.

Different audiences have unique needs and respond to communication styles differently, so this information is vital. Knowing one’s audience beforehand also helps with connecting with them on a human level. Connection is vital in any presentation or public speaking engagement.

Dress to impress

Before you say anything, when you stand in front of people, the first thing they will notice is how you are dressed. That’s their first impression of you. Different dress codes will be required for different audiences, but make sure that however you dress, it shows that you made an effort.

We also feel more confident when we know we look nice. There is no standard way of dressing, your environment and audience will determine that, but make sure it is presentable.

Grab their attention

From the moment you walk on stage, or the online presentation is focused on you, it is time to grab your audience’s attention. This is not only for the opening, but also for engaging their attention throughout. Whenever appropriate, use humor, tell a story, or include interesting statistics to keep their attention and more able to follow your presentation or speech.

Watch for feedback

The audience will always give feedback. Watch out for their questions, body postures, and non-verbal and verbal communication to see if you need to adjust how you are presenting in real-time. This means that you need to be flexible enough to switch things up or change your presentation style when you deem it necessary.

Be confident, relax

This is easier said than done, but, looking confident goes a long way in grabbing the attention of those you are speaking to. If you are feeling nervous, take breaks, ask questions, and involve the audience until you regain your composure. Relax, speak normally, and always breathe to relax.

Body image issues during menopause.

Menopause brings on so many changes. These mental and physical changes can lead to body image issues. Considering that menopause can last from a few years to more than a decade, learning how to adapt to these changes can bolster your mental health.

Not every menopausal symptom may apply to you. Some women only experience a drop in energy levels and a few hot flashes, while others have a wide array of symptoms. If you are experiencing a health change that seems unusual for your body, speak to your healthcare provider to confirm that it is a normal part of menopause. Likewise, if any of these changes has you feeling depressed, anxious, or embarrassed, reach out to a counselor today.

Change in body composition.

During menopause (and the period before menopause, known as peri-menopause), you may find your body composition changing. If you always gain weight in your hips and thighs, you might notice that new weight gain seems to settle around your abdomen, increasing your waist size.

This increase in waist measurement combined with weight gain can lead to a higher BMI (Body Mass Index). Because a higher BMI has been shown to increase risk for heart attacks and stroke, this may alarm you.

As menopause continues, your muscle mass begins to decrease. This is a great time to begin strength training with weights or body-weight resistance. Weight-bearing exercises increase, strengthen, and tone muscle, as well as strengthen bones and ligaments.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn overall. However, if exercise triggers you or you suffer from an eating disorder or body dysmorphia, speak to a counselor before embarking on an exercise program.

Thinning hair.

Estrogen and progesterone are two hormones that dramatically drop during menopause. Among other things, this steady decline can lead to thinning hair and less volume. In some cases, another hormone, androgen, increases and may reduce the size of hair follicles. You may also notice your nails becoming thinner and more brittle.

For some women, these changes can induce worry about appearance and how others perceive them. They may find they struggle with body comparison, often to younger women or even their own previous body shape. Expensive procedures and products might be sought to fight hair loss and thinning.

If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, talk to your doctor or discuss this with a counselor.

Less skin elasticity.

Not only can the effects of menopause be seen on hair and nails, but also a person’s skin may become dryer and lose its firmness. Collagen production gradually declines during menopause. Usually, a larger change occurs in the first five years followed by a more gradual decrease.

Consulting with a nutritionist about the best nutritional supplements, like powered collagen, to boost levels and maintain elasticity, can be a helpful strategy. Investing in creams and serums to increase firmness in the face, neck, and full body may also be a consideration.

However, if fine lines and sagging lead to self-consciousness and esteem issues, it could be time to reach out for help. If you no longer feel beautiful or second guess your attractiveness, seek the trusted support of a counselor to work through these feelings.

Lower self-esteem.

All of these physical changes can lead to lower self-esteem. You may no longer feel confident in your appearance, especially if your appearance is a particularly significant piece of your identity. As menopause continues and you experience more changes in the mirror, it may be time to seek professional help, especially if you struggle with any of the following symptoms:

Depression.

Anxiety.

Feelings of low self-worth.

Rapid weight gain or loss.

Impulsive behaviors.

Disordered eating behaviors like starvation, purging, or binging.

Sleep issues.

Intrusive thoughts.

Withdrawal or avoidance of social interactions.

Suicidal thoughts.

Self-harm.

If you struggle with suicidal thoughts or ideations, contact help immediately.

Mental health conditions.

Body image issues may have you caught in a cycle that can lead you deeper into mental health conditions. Eating disorders, body dysmorphia, anxiety, social anxiety disorders, and depression can stem from these issues. In many cases, it takes the guidance of a mental health professional to help you through this season.

Do you need help with body image issues?

Body image issues can wear on your mind as well as your physical body. Counseling is an excellent way to introduce strategies to make the transition through menopause smoother. Contact our office today at Agoura Christian Counseling in California to discuss how counseling can help lessen the impact of body image issues and treat specific conditions, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and body dysmorphia.

It can seem weird that we must be taught to love and accept ourselves. The truth of the matter is growing up, most of us have been swayed away from self-acceptance, taking care of ourselves, valuing ourselves, or being kind to ourselves because such actions have been defined as selfish, narcissistic, or grandiose.

More value has been placed on how sacrificial one is, how much one looks to the needs of others and less to their own needs that amid it all we have lost the ability to love, accept, and be compassionate toward ourselves.

While looking to the needs of others is important, today we will look at how important it is for us to shine the light on ourselves and how important self-acceptance is. Self-acceptance can be defined as the ability for one to look at themselves and accept all aspects of their being, warts and all. Agoura Christian Counseling can help guide individuals on this journey of self-acceptance.

It is having a realistic evaluation of oneself and being content with that evaluation without judgment, shame, or criticism. It is embracing both the good and the bad of who one is.

It is important to note that self-acceptance is not about people not acknowledging and changing their weaknesses, bad attributes, or behavior. On the contrary, self-acceptance is the bedrock of self-development and self-improvement. When someone accepts their flaws and weaknesses it means that they are not living in denial, and they can seek help for the areas they know need to be rectified.

Key components of self-acceptance

For someone to fully embrace who they are irrespective of their flaws and despite their achievements, certain components need to be present in how they live their lives. Below are a few suggestions:

Self-awareness.

Being self-aware means that you have all the details of who you are. You know your strengths, weaknesses, attributes, triggers, and emotions. You are honest with yourself.

Authenticity.

Showing up and living life as your most genuine self is the height of self-acceptance. Authentic living means you are not afraid or ashamed of who you are, but you dare to be seen for who you truly are. It is embracing your uniqueness and individuality.

Resilience.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and failure. In life we will all fall short of something; the aim is not to stay there but to use those setbacks as opportunities for reflection and growth.

Self-Compassion.

Truth be told, we are most times our own greatest critics. We hold ourselves to standards that we do not even hold for other people. This needs to stop if we are to fully live a life of self-acceptance. Practicing self-compassion means we learn to forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. We show ourselves the same kindness we freely give to others.

Celebration of achievements.

For fear of being perceived as being full of pride, people have underplayed their achievements or at times haven’t even acknowledged them at all. For us to live in self-acceptance, we also must acknowledge those things we are good at without shame. Our abilities and good qualities should never be something we have to hide but fully embraced and celebrated.

Unconditional love.

The world teaches us at times that for us to deserve love and attention, we first must be perfect and without flaws. Unconditional lovecombats that by loving yourself, right here right now as you are. This is especially important for people struggling with addiction or a habit they want to break. You can love and appreciate yourself even as you are on the road to recovery, not only when you recover.

Staying in your lane.

Self-acceptance means you are not in competition with anyone. You understand what your journey is and your unique situation. You are not living a life of chasing records and the achievements of others. You let go of comparisons.

Benefits of self–acceptance

As a tool for a more peaceful and meaningful life, self-acceptance is a powerful tool. There are many reasons why it can be beneficial to our daily life, below are a few reasons why it is vital:

Enhanced mental and physical health.

For many people, making decisions is difficult, and it is particularly so for those who have dealt with ADHD, mental health issues, and trauma. All of these things can make decisions big and small challenging to make.

Your mental capacity is finite, and if you are trying to make decisions all the time, you may be using up your capacity on things that could be simple. You want your brain to focus on the big decisions, the deadlines you need to meet, and unexpected situations that pop up in your day. Agoura Christian Counseling can help you develop strategies to manage decision fatigue and maintain mental clarity.

These few questions and ideas may help you identify the little decisions that are overwhelming and figure out ways to relieve the weight of making those decisions.

What can be streamlined?

Routines are one of the safest ways to minimize decision-making. Whether you do the same thing every morning or choose a day to run errands, consistency is key. Maybe you decide that Mondays are laundry days, so you make a habit of starting a load Monday morning.

Organization can help simplify certain decisions as well, for example:

The keys always go on the key hanger on the wall in the entryway.

The cleaning supplies are stored in the closet next to the bathroom.

Having a place for things helps you find what you need, when you need it, and prevents you from trying to figure out what needs to happen next.

What can be systemized?

Find a system that is flexible and also relieves the need to make a decision every single day.

Consider creating a uniform to minimize clothing choices.

Pick one grocery store for shopping.

Have the same breakfast each day.

There might be decisions that you don’t need to make. If meal planning is stressful, ask your family what meals they would like for the next week. Figure out if certain work decisions can be delegated to another team member. Ask your spouse to make decisions for you.

What decisions need to be made for others?

There may be people who need you to make choices for them, but that does not necessarily mean that you get to assert your voice over theirs. Communication and input from all parties often need to be considered in your decision-making, even if the buck stops with you.

When can others help you make a decision?

Some decisions benefit from the wisdom and insight of others – typically, situations with dramatic life shifts. Seeking input from respected friends and family may guide you to the best option. Just remember to ask people who want you to be your best, not those who want you to do things their way.

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. – Psalm 25:4-5, NIV

God is always available to give wisdom when need to make a choice. Prayer helps you reach that line whenever you need it. You will not get a precise answer, but when you are looking you may see Him guiding your way.

That’s a good thing, because variety helps us stay engaged, and it stretches us to be creative as we engage with new situations. We discover new things about ourselves and our capacities as we make our way through fresh situations, and that growth is necessary. While this is all true, that doesn’t mean that change and newness are always welcome, nor are they always easy to manage.

Being adaptable helps you cope with change, and it also helps to have a welcoming attitude toward different things. Yes, they may take you out of your rhythms and established patterns, but they can show you parts of yourself you never knew existed. Whatever you like and consider a mainstay in your life was once a new thing. Agoura Christian Counseling can help you navigate these changes with wisdom and support.

Bible Verses About Change

Consider the following Bible verses about change when you’re going through a new season or life transition.

Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions. – Ecclesiastes 7:10, NIV

Consider this possibly mind-blowing fact: today is going to be, in years to come, the good old days. When you constantly yearn for what was instead of what is, you stay stuck and don’t embrace what today may bring. That includes any change that may come your way.

No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins. – Mark 2:21-22, NIV

Jesus told this parable to explain why He and His disciples were not fasting. He was not behaving in the expected way, and that’s because something new, Jesus Himself, was happening. This was not the time to be fasting, but to celebrate while the Son of God was present among us.

By clinging to their own understanding of how things were supposed to be – in other words, by being like old wineskins – the people were unable to embrace the new thing that had happened among them. To embrace new things, and this includes a fresh movement of God’s Spirit, requires an openness to what God may be doing.

This is in no way slamming traditions or tried and true ways of doing things. it is simply to suggest that it is possible and wise to have a good balance between doing what is tried and true, and remaining open to change and new things.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! – 2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV

Jesus changes everything! When you believe the gospel and become a child of God, He transforms you in innumerable ways. Many passages of Scripture detail what happens, and the many blessings you receive when you become a disciple of Jesus (Ephesians 1: 1-14). God pours out His Spirit upon you, equipping you to live a life pleasing to Him (Romans 8; Galatians 5: 13-26).

You no longer live life to please yourself, but to love and serve God and other people, recognizing that it won’t always be smooth sailing. Your outlook on your life, how you handle money, think about sex, handle conflict, and how you deal with power and various life circumstances all change. You are a new person with a new calling to follow after God.

Frequently, the things we tell ourselves can be much more hurtful than the things others say to us. For the majority of their lives, many have struggled with negative self-talk, which has had an impact on their dispositions, levels of energy, and productivity. The majority of us desire an exciting and adventurous life, but our inner critic ruins everything positive. Agoura Christian Counseling can help individuals work through this negative self-talk and reclaim their confidence and happiness.

That self-criticism gives everything that is happening in our lives right now a “yes, but” attitude. Yes, it’s great that you graduated from college, but who will hire you? Yes, you lost ten pounds, but you’ll quickly put them back on. Continually focusing on doom and gloom, negative self-talk refuses to see the positive aspects of what is occurring. This is not helpful to us.

1. Acknowledge when you’re engaging in negative self-talk.

You can’t change something you don’t acknowledge, according to Dr. Phil McGraw. Recognizing when we are engaging in a bad habit is the first step in changing it. You might want to write about it in your journal or make a mental note of it as it occurs.

2. Identify the intentions behind your negative self-talk.

Unaware of it, our past disappointments and wounds have an impact on how we act today. Underneath the self-talk that is critical of oneself is the desire to avoid failure, disappointment, and pain.

3. Reframe your present experience.

To break the habit of our brain associating the current experience with negativity. Reframing is the process of viewing an experience, event, or idea from a different perspective in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Reframing is necessary if our minds tend to focus on the negative rather than the positive aspects of events.

Reconsider the previous two examples.

Although it might take some time to find a job right after graduation, this fact does not lessen your achievement! Graduating is a big accomplishment.

Sure, losing ten pounds won’t ensure that you stay in shape forever. You cannot, however, dispute the reality that you lost those ten pounds.

Reframing our erroneous perception gives us the ability to see reality for what it is. It also keeps us from going through the emotional rollercoaster we do every day.

How does cognitive reframing work to reduce negative self-talk?

By using a technique called cognitive reframing, you can change your perspective and see a person, a situation, or a relationship from a slightly different angle. Anytime you experience distorted thinking, you can practice cognitive reframing at home.

Sometimes having a therapist by your side can be beneficial, especially if you are stuck in a negative thought pattern. It is referred to as cognitive restructuring when the technique is applied in a therapeutic environment and is practiced with a therapist’s assistance.

Reframing’s central tenet is that a person’s point of view is shaped by the frame through which they view a situation. When that frame is altered, the meaning also changes, which frequently causes thinking and behavior to adapt as well.

Imagine yourself looking through a camera lens to better comprehend the idea of reframing. You can adjust the view through the lens to see objects closer to you or farther away from you. The image is viewed and experienced differently by slightly altering what is captured by the camera.

Cognitive reframing benefits.

Using cognitive reframing to transform issues or unfavorable thoughts into chances for improvement and growth can be beneficial, whether it is done on one’s own or with a therapist’s assistance. Although this method is frequently employed in therapy, you can also employ it at home. You can train yourself to constantly remind yourself that there are other explanations besides the one you initially came to.

Alter your perspective.

It’s simple to believe that your perspective is the only viable approach to a situation. Asking yourself questions like “Is there another way to look at this situation?” or “What are some other possible reasons this could have happened?” is a skill you can learn through cognitive reframing. Providing alternatives can help you gain a new perspective.

Validate feelings.

Do not attempt to rationalize or invalidate your feelings. Remember to acknowledge a child’s or teen’s feelings by saying, “I understand how you feel “I am aware of your anxiety over their failure to call you back. I’m aware that whenever I’m anxious, I always think of the worst-case scenarios, but a lot of the time, what I imagine doesn’t happen.”

Be compassionate.

Asking yourself or your child, “What would you say to a friend who had this problem?” can also help you or them maintain their mental health. You might discover that when you speak to yourself, you tend to be harsher and less compassionate than when you speak to others. The objective should be to promote positive self-talk. You’ll eventually come to understand that there are various perspectives on the same situation.

How well cognitive reframing works.

Studies on the therapeutic effects of cognitive restructuring for patients as well as the advantages of cognitive reframing for providers and caregivers in terms of preventing burnout have been conducted in great numbers.

For instance, using cognitive reframing has been shown to improve quality of life and reduce anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a study on professionals who treated people with substance use disorders, cognitive reframing reduced their risk of burnout and improved treatment outcomes.

Cognitive reframing has been shown to improve communication and overall quality of life in caregivers of people with dementia by lowering stress, anxiety, and depression in these individuals. In one study of individuals with PTSD and mental illness, cognitive restructuring was found to lessen symptoms and enhance functioning.

A 2014 study found that for people with social anxiety disorder, cognitive restructuring decreased post-event processing (PEP), or the reflective thoughts you have after being in a social situation.

Getting rid of cognitive distortions and negative self-talk.

Common tendencies and patterns of thinking or believing known as cognitive distortions, which can lead to negative thought patterns, include:

All-or-nothing perspective: Taking an absolute view of events.

Putting blame: Attributing a single cause to a variety of issues.

Catastrophizing: Constantly imagining the worst-case scenario for any circumstance.

Neglecting the favorable negative thinking: Always focusing on the negatives and discounting the positive things that happen to you. Feeling like you’ve never done what you “should” have in a situation because of “should” statements.

Think about whether it would be better to identify and create coping mechanisms on your own or with the help of a therapist. It’s critical to talk to a mental health professional, especially if you’re having suicidal thoughts.

What effects does reframing have on cognitive distortions?

The negative ideas and beliefs that cause distress are contested by reframing. People can feel more resilient and upbeat in the face of stress by learning to recognize distorted thinking and then actively working to change these thoughts to be more positive and realistic.

When is cognitive reframing effective against negative self-talk?

When someone is depressed, they can alter their perspective so that they can concentrate on the positive aspects of the situation. Reframing can assist people in focusing on the aspects of the situation that they can control when they are under stress rather than becoming overwhelmed by the things they cannot change.

What is the difference between cognitive restructuring and cognitive reframing?

People can use reframing as a technique to help them change their perspective, either on their own or in therapy. It frequently entails putting more emphasis on optimistic ideas, but it can also be centered on lowering unrealistically high expectations. On the other hand, cognitive restructuring is a therapeutic technique that challenges and replaces unhelpful or unreasonable thoughts.

How can cognitive reframing be practiced to combat negative self-talk?

By becoming more conscious of your thoughts and how they affect how you see various situations, you can practice cognitive reframing. It can be beneficial to practice mindfulness or meditation to increase your awareness of your thoughts. Agoura Christian Counseling can provide guidance and support in this process, helping you transform negative thought patterns into more positive and empowering ones.

The following action is to consciously change your perspective. Consider alternative perspectives on the circumstances. Are there any factors that you have not thought of? Are there any additional explanations you should think about? Using techniques like gratitude journaling or visualization can be beneficial as you work to alter your way of thinking.

Do you do this to other people? For example, has your significant other accused you of passive-aggressive behaviors such as silent treatment or ignoring his or her calls? Passive aggressiveness stems from underlying anger and an inability to express this anger.

What is passive-aggressive behavior?

What happens when you bury anger deep inside? It manifests itself in other behaviors, including passive aggressiveness. These behaviors might begin during childhood if you grew up in a household where it was frowned upon to express anger, whether you were punished for talking back or anger was considered impolite.

A person who is painfully uncomfortable in confrontational situations will avoid them at all costs. Instead, he or she may lash out by engaging in passive-aggressive behaviors and “getting back” at the other person.

Examples of passive-aggressive behaviors include:

Saying you are fine but crossing your arms and turning away from the person when your words and body language do not match.

Doing underhanded things to sabotage someone else’s efforts. For example, agreeing to work on a project and presentation but not coming through at the last minute or arriving late on purpose.

Refusing to speak and instead employing silent treatment. Someone with passive-aggressive behaviors may refuse to answer your call if he or she feels slighted. He or she may only give you nonverbal cues like sighing and eye-rolling.

Although procrastination can be a bad habit, it is also passive-aggressive behavior. When you procrastinate, you often make others wait on you to do something, leave the house, or arrive at a destination. It is another form of control.

Passive-aggressive behaviors can also signify a mental disorder like anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. A licensed mental health care provider can help you get to the root of the behavior.

Whether you or a loved one display passive-aggressive behaviors, you must address the problems of not expressing anger constructively. These behaviors can cause issues with your relationship. In addition, children watching their parents engage in these behaviors will pick these habits up and use them in the future.

If you are aware of your behavior, you can stop. Changing the behavior patterns may take practice, but you can learn to recognize the thoughts and emotions and decide to react differently. Agoura Christian Counseling can help guide you through this process, offering support as you work to create healthier responses and reactions in your life.

Read below for tips on how to stop passive-aggressive behavior.

Recognize the signs.

Have you ever noticed the thoughts that bombard your mind when you are angry? The ideas that you have before you decide how to react? It is these thoughts that you need to catch. But first, you must realize that feeling anger is natural and normal. Everyone does. However, how you react determines whether your behavior is productive in resolving the conflict.

Familiarize yourself with the signs of passive-aggressive behavior to identify when a loved one is using them on you. You want to be able to stop the behavior. Your loved one may not be aware that he or she is reacting this way as he or she may have grown up in a household where this was how one parent would express their displeasure. Be patient, but be ready to stand up for yourself firmly.

Ask yourself why.

Once you catch your thoughts, ask yourself why. Why are you angry? Did this person really slight you, or is this a perceived slight? Would it serve you better to confront the person? Why are you afraid of direct confrontation?

These are legitimate questions. If you are afraid of confrontation, is it because you think the person will harm or embarrass you somehow? Why do you think you resort to these behaviors? A Christian counselor can help you understand the why behind your actions.

When the behavior is from a loved one, recognize that there is something else at play. For example, he or she is feeling anger or resentment over something. You may want to try directly asking him or her. It might be an emotionally painful discussion, but continuing with passive aggressiveness will not serve the relationship.

Be direct and assertive.

There is a difference between being direct and assertive and being rude. Unfortunately, many of us grew up believing these were the same. We were taught to be empathetic and never harsh. This belief wars against us when we feel anger. How do we express our anger without offending the other person or causing him or her pain?

Being direct and calmly speaking is a behavior to practice. It is informing the other person that when he or she behaves in such a way, it affects you. For example, your husband may seem miffed because you forgot to pick up his favorite box of cookies from the store. Still, instead of saying something to you and accepting your apology, he “forgets” to get gas for the lawnmower – a chore you have wanted him to take care of for two weeks.

In this mild example, you could approach your spouse and apologize again for forgetting the cookies. But then add, “I know you were disappointed that I forgot your favorite cookies at the store.

But, when you intentionally do things like ‘forget’ the gasoline for the lawnmower, I feel that you are doing it out of spite, and it hurts me. We can understand that we each have things on our minds, and it is easy to make mistakes. Why don’t we go right now to the store for the cookies and pick gasoline up for the mower?”

With this approach, you have calmly addressed the situation. You have acknowledged your husband’s disappointment, informed him how this behavior made you feel, and given your husband an opportunity to help you rectify it.

Work off your anger.

That underlying anger needs a healthy outlet. You need something to burn off that aggression. Instead of turning to alcohol, substance abuse, or other vices, consider throwing that aggression into a more physical endeavor.

Exercise is an excellent way to work out your frustrations and hurt. If you are healthy and have your physician’s approval, you can throw yourself into cardio workouts, running, circuit training, lifting weights, kickboxing, or other activities. Even brisk walking can burn some negative energy off and dissipate the emotion.

Although slower in movement, yoga, and tai chi can help you catch your breath and release some of the anger you are bottling inside. The flows quiet your mind but keep you focused on the breath and movements.

Take note of what works and when you need help.

As your behavioral patterns change, you will grow in self-confidence. Confrontation will be less scary. The more you realize that you can diffuse a situation by being assertive yet calm, the less anger will have a hold on you.

Anger is an emotion everyone feels, but how you handle yourself determines your mental health. You may believe you are “getting back” at someone who hurt you with these behaviors. But, you are pushing others away and putting yourself at risk for anxiety and depression.

If you try these suggestions and are still passive-aggressively lashing out at others, you may want to reach out for help from a therapist. Knowing better and doing better is not always a smooth transition without professional help.

The problem is that we often wait to employ stress management until it’s a reaction. Maybe we’re coasting along without too many upheavals in life, and then something unexpected happens we get thrown completely off-kilter.

When we reactively try to manage our stress, we’re already a step behind. Sometimes we live in a state of denial, thinking that we’ll always be relatively in control of our circumstances. But other times we give in to hopelessness or a sense of helplessness or futility, believing that because we’re powerless in many ways, we can do nothing to change or improve a difficult situation.

The truth, of course, lies somewhere in the middle. While many things in life are outside of our control, we always get to choose our response. And when we cultivate a mindset that accepts hard things, relies on God for strength, and is ready for consistent daily, positive action, we put ourselves in a much better position to thrive under stress.

Active stress management involves a few different components:

Mitigating, preventing, or eliminating stress whenever possible.

Creating a healthy baseline of daily habits to set ourselves up for success.

Building resilience through multiple means.

Preparing to respond well to inevitable stressors.

Keep reading to learn more about personal development and stress management, and how Christian counseling or coaching can play a pivotal role in a proactive response to stress.

What Are the Most Common Stressors?

In numerous surveys, the most common source of stress was reported to be work. Many different factors about work can create stress, including people you have to interact with, an unreasonable workload, feeling unappreciated and/or underpaid, not feeling a sense of meaning at your job, etc.

A second huge category of stress is just considered life stress. This can range from the extreme, like death and trauma, to everyday struggles with finances, or even good transitions like marriage or the birth of a child. All of these events can be a source of stress.

And finally, WebMD lists internal stress as the third main category. This type of stressor looks different for every individual, based on personality, anxiety level, perspective on life, expectations of life and people, genetics, etc.

These categories show that stressors cannot always be prevented, but they can often be reduced, or sometimes a stressor can be eliminated, whether in the short-term or long-term.

How do we prevent or reduce some of the most common stressors we experience?

Everyday choices that reduce stress.

When we struggle with feeling overwhelmed, anxious about everything we have to do, and/or having a mental health condition like depression, considering how to make improvements can add an insurmountable burden to our days.

If you feel this way, please know that you don’t need to perfectly implement the following habits to live a calm life. You can start small. Baby steps make a huge difference when it comes to a healthy mental and physical lifestyle.

Individual counseling for stress management techniques can help you decide on and implement healthy changes in a way that feels measurable and achievable. Sometimes we can’t access all of these techniques because it’s not possible in our situation.

Don’t be discouraged; you don’t have to do every one of these things to reap the benefits of stress management. Think of these practices for stress reduction as a menu of healthy options for you to choose from.

Social practices

Spending time with loved ones.

Cultivating friendships and a support system.

Reaching out when you’re overwhelmed.

Talking about your feelings.

Asking for help.

Helping others and supporting them.

Practicing assertiveness and setting healthy boundaries.

Lifestyle practices

Following a daily routine.

Making a realistic plan and consistently following through.

Balancing work and rest.

Exercising regularly.

Eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet.

Practicing good sleep hygiene and habits.

Practicing breathing techniques.

Pursuing a hobby.

Keeping a gratitude journal.

Mental/perspective shifts

Looking for the good or positive aspects of a situation.

Accepting circumstances we can’t change.

Adapting our behavior as needed.

Reframing our perspective to see something a different way.

Avoiding perfectionism, which is in itself a huge source of stress.

How can we build resilience?

Resilience, or the “build[ing] [of] skills to endure hardship” (Mayo Clinic), can be a major factor in why one person successfully navigates stress, while another person spirals.

The good news is that even if you are low in resilience right now, it’s a character trait you have the power to cultivate.

Scripture often talks about perseverance, which is a similar concept to resilience:

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. – Galatians 6:9, ESV

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. – James 1:2-4, ESV

Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. – Proverbs 4:26

A few key aspects of resilience include healthy relationships, having a sense of meaning, having a hopeful perspective, and having the ability to make a plan and follow through with it.

Here’s what the Mayo Clinic says about follow-through and how it can build resilience when you show up for yourself:

“Don’t ignore your problems. Instead, figure out what needs to be done, make a plan and take action. Although it can take time to recover from a major setback, traumatic event, or loss, know that your situation can improve if you work at it.”

Not only does this apply to stressful situations, but it also applies to building a resilient mindset. Keep at it and seek to make improvements each day. Over time, you will see a positive shift, which can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

How can we prepare to respond to inevitable stress?

No matter how much we practice healthy habits, cultivate strong relationships, and practice gratitude and positivity, we cannot prevent struggles in life. Here are some ways to prepare for future stress, whether you know something specific is coming or not:

1. Be realistic about your stress load, and your capacity to handle stress.

Let’s say you are a full-time caregiver for three children under age five, and there’s a hurricane headed your way. You probably wouldn’t focus on anything else besides preparing for the storm and caring for your children. This is an example of intense, triaged prioritization. Knowing your priorities is key to stress management. Intentionally choosing to let certain things go is empowering.

Reactively giving in to poor habits, addictions, or procrastination will make you feel worse overall. So, know yourself and your tendencies ahead of time, and when the stressor comes your way, be prepared to adjust.

2. Reach out for support.

Sometimes this truly isn’t an option, but if it is an option for you, know that there is no shame in asking for help. Individual Christian counseling is one form of help that can both encourage you in your faith, and help you employ techniques to manage your stress during challenging times of life.

While God created us for community and it is his provision to us, he is ultimately the only one we can rely on to care for us throughout all the difficulties of life. Having a strong relationship with God enables us to trust him, even when things on the outside seem dark and confusing.

There is always something going on that affects everyone’s life. Whether it is through our job, family members, or everyday life we feel the effects of each situation. This has led to an increase in many people being diagnosed with anxiety and other related health concerns. The greatest way to combat this is to take every thought captive. Agoura Christian Counseling can provide support and guidance for those looking to develop strategies for managing anxiety and finding peace in the midst of chaos.

This thought process is based on 1 Corinthians 10:5 which states “We are destroying arguments and all arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” (NASB) Let’s look at this in terms of overcoming anxiety and how we can apply it to our lives.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is defined in Webster’s 1828 dictionary as:

“1.concern or solicitude respecting some event, future, or uncertain, which disturbs the mind, and keeps it in a state of painful uneasiness. it expresses more than uneasiness or disturbance, and even more than trouble or solicitude. it usually springs from fear or serious apprehension of evil, and involves a suspense respecting an event, and often, a perplexity of mind, to know how to shape our conduct.

2. In medical language, uneasiness; unceasing restlessness in sickness.”

In other words, it stems from thoughts regarding events or situations that cause various reactions within the body. Heart palpitations, trouble breathing, dizziness, and even fatigue can result from anxiety.

What causes anxiety?

Many factors can lead to a person experiencing Anxiety. The most common are factors dealing with careers. The everyday stresses at work can weigh heavily on our thoughts. Making sure that we are completing our work tasks as we manage our workload is an everyday activity.

This activity can cause anxiety when we feel overwhelmed with tasks. We may begin to think that we cannot possibly get everything done. A few other factors are family and home life.

Having children in a busy world has created a sense of thinking that they need to be in every activity to be successful. This in itself can create apprehension from thinking that we aren’t raising our children the best way.

Struggling to pay bills is a sure way to experience anxiety. There are so many sub-factors within these factors that can play a part in experiencing anxiety. When we have a fear of any of these factors, we will more than likely experience some form of anxiety.

Conquering anxiety by learning to take every thought captive

One of the first things to recognize when it comes to anxiety is to determine what is triggering us to experience sudden apprehension or fear. What is going on in the situation that is provoking us to think in negative terms? When we identify this trigger begins to change the way we are thinking about it. When thoughts of fear begin to enter our mind that is when we begin to take every thought captive by changing what we are thinking.

Change the way you think

God did not design us to ponder on the negative aspects of this world. We were designed to think of the goodness of God and all things that are related to that goodness.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things. As for the things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. – Philippians 4:8-9, NASB

By thinking about these things we can change the focus of our thoughts from fear to peace. We weren’t designed to live in fear. God created us to live in peace and without anxiety. He doesn’t want us to be caught up in the negative thoughts that the adversary tries to tell us. The thoughts that cause fear are those that the adversary uses to distract us from the goodness of God and His truth.

Renew your mind

When we become consumed with the chaos of the world we are no longer focused on God and His word. God is not confusion or chaos. He does not expect us to live that type of lifestyle. When we concentrate on His word, we will find that we regain peace.

Changing the way we think involves choosing to dwell on the negative or positive. It is up to us to identify those thoughts that cause us to be overcome with fear. This will help us renew our thoughts. The hold of anxiety becomes broken.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2, NASB

By focusing on the goodness of what God has given us we change the thoughts that we have. It is through this choice that we find we can stay away from emotions that contribute to anxiety. For example, if you are asked to do something that was not in your plan for the day you may become agitated.

At this point, anxiety is knocking at the door of your health. You may even begin to become testy with everyone around you. That is the perfect time to pause, breathe and refocus your thought.

Speak life

There is always a positive side to every situation. The key is pausing long enough to recognize the good side. Even when we are looking at a flat tire there is always a way to see the good. Maybe this delay is keeping you from an accident up the road. It comes down to deciding how you will choose to face the situations that cause anxiety.

This includes watching how we speak about the situations. Have you ever noticed that when you complain and grumble you begin to feel out of sorts? That is because the words you are using are affecting the emotion you are feeling. This in turn will creep into your thought process and you will find yourself becoming angry or sad. Proverbs 18 contains many verses regarding how our words affect our lives. One of the most common verses quoted is:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21, NASB

Words are one of the strongest tools we can use to take every thought captive to overcome anxiety. Seek to speak life and speak positive words to others and yourself.

Realize it’s not in your control

One of the hardest things for us to learn is that we cannot control everything. As parents, we can teach our children proper behaviors as they grow up, but when they become adults, we can no longer change how they make decisions. What other people do and the choices they make are not our responsibility. After all, even if we are in a leadership position at work, we still cannot control others. We can only control our reactions and our behaviors.

In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus tells us that trying to be in control is not how we take every thought captive. Being focused on the concerns of life only distracts us from the truth that God is the only one in control.

He has promised to provide for us and does not want us to spend useless time dwelling on things He is taking care of. Learning that we are not in control of everything is of the hardest mindsets to change. It is possible when we focus on the Word of God and His promises.

So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:34, NASB

Stay in the right lane

We try to be the best at everything. We want to do it all and do it right. Trying to do something just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t make it right. Just because it looks easy doesn’t mean it’s something that is for you to do. God has designed each of us for a specific calling. He has given us the talents and skills we need to perform that calling. When we get out of our lane and try to do what someone else is doing, we find ourselves facing anxiety.

We become stressed because we aren’t able to do the task the same as others. That is when we have lost focus on what God wants for us. You may find yourself struggling to teach a class about women in the Bible.

The only reason you are teaching that class is that one of your close friends is teaching a class on the Beatitudes. You have taken the focus of your skills and stepped into another lane. To remove the anxiety you have to take every thought captive and acknowledge that you need to get back in your lane.

Paul tells us that we are to look to Jesus as we pursue the calling that God has placed on our lives. It is through this mindset that we can remove anxiety caused by not feeling like we are good enough. Comparing ourselves to others creates tension between us and them. It’s not long before we find that we have become anxious about not measuring up to God’s standards.

Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:1-2, NASB

Remain focused on what God has called you to do, what you know you can do, and the promises of God. This will help alleviate any avenues for anxiety to find its way into your thought process. Take every thought captive by focusing on the good things, speaking life, and trusting the leading of Jesus.

But how do you do this? Today we’ll outline the five steps of effective listening that you can put into play in all your relationships.

What Is Effective Listening?

Effective listening counteracts the shortening attention spans and selfishness that is growing in our fast-paced culture. It helps people feel loved and affirmed with very little time or effort on your part. As you work on becoming a better listener, the people around you will feel the love of God through you.

Ironically, most of us find it more difficult to listen well to those who are closest to us, most often our family members. Since we are sinful by nature, sometimes we overlook the importance of putting our loved ones first. But when we start using effective listening with them, we can increase the respect and love in each of our relationships.

Wanting to learn how to listen better is an important first step. You need to learn more than simply paying better attention to what someone else is saying. A few specific skills will help you get much more from conversations with others. An intentional approach to interacting with others will help improve your relationships. If you’re looking for guidance in developing these skills, seeking support from a counselor at Agoura Christian Counseling can provide valuable tools to enhance your communication and foster healthier connections.

Effective listening isn’t difficult, but it involves a few key steps so your relationships can change for the better. Here are five steps to becoming a better listener.

1. Slow Down

To listen well, you must slow down enough to hear the other person. You can signal your body to slow down by deep breathing. While the other person is speaking, be mindful in the moment and look into their eyes while they are talking. When you slow down, you’ll pick up cues for better listening.

2. Don’t Interrupt

When you interrupt, you demonstrate that you are not listening to the other person. Interruption kills conversation. If you are tempted to interrupt, gently bite your tongue to keep from speaking. Pause and think through what you want to say and why you want to say it. You can stop interrupting people by thinking about the way you would like to be treated, which surely includes not being interrupted.

3. Take Mental Notes

Lots of people seem like they are listening when they are actually preparing what they will say when the other person stops talking. But to practice effective listening, you need to give the speaker your full attention while they are speaking. To stay on track, take mental notes as if you were transcribing the conversation. Get all the details down in your mind so you can have a more fruitful conversation when it’s your turn to talk.

4. Ask Thoughtful Questions

The more thoughtful your questions are, the higher the quality of your conversations will be. You can always say, “Tell me more about that,” which shows the speaker you are interested. When commenting, refer to details of what the speaker told you, and they will feel affirmed. To gain a full understanding of the conversation, you can ask for clarification or more information. Thoughtful questions will help you get the most out of the conversation.

5. Empathize and Affirm

Effective listening involves both empathy and affirmation. You can always say “That must be difficult,” even if you don’t agree with the speaker’s point of view. Affirmation is a way to bless the speaker. Words of affirmation include things like “You did a great job” or “that sounds like a good idea.” When you empathize and affirm the speaker, they will want to open up more.

These five tips can help you improve your listening skills in all your relationships. Here is another big tip for becoming a better listener.

The Practice of Active Listening

Active listening is a form of effective listening. It can open channels of communication that may feel blocked or frustrating. You can gain a deep understanding of the speaker through active listening, which will also increase the peace in your relationships.

An active listener offers affirmation and asks many clarifying questions. Here is an example of how active listening works between a teen and his mom.

Teen: “I don’t want to do chores on Saturdays. I’d much rather spend time with my friends.”

Mom: “Sounds to me like you are frustrated that you have chores to do on Saturdays. Is that correct?”

Teen: “I don’t mind doing chores, but I’d rather spread them out over more than one day. That will give me more time to be with my friends.”

Mom: “So you’d like to spread your chores out. Can you tell me more about how this might work?”

Teen: “If I do several chores on weeknights, then I can have my Saturdays free to be with my friends.”

Mom: “You want to switch from doing chores on Saturdays to doing them on weeknights. Did I get that right?”

Teen: “Yes, that’s right. If I get one chore done per day, I’m pretty sure I can still manage my homework and keep Saturdays free.”

Mom: “What I hear you saying is that you will do one chore per weekday and manage your homework, then you will be free on Saturdays. Did I miss anything?”

Teen: “No, you didn’t miss anything. Today I’ll do my laundry, okay?”

Though this example could have easily turned into a power struggle, the mom practiced active listening to keep the conversation clear, calm, and focused. The teen expressed his feelings without fear of being criticized or punished. The mom resisted making corrections or laying down the law with a heavy hand. This example shows how conversations can arrive at solutions much faster with active listening, which reduces conflict.

Active listening involves affirming the other person, withholding judgment and defensiveness, asking for clarification, and mutual respect. It’s a powerful way to increase the quality of your interactions with others.

How Effective Listening Improves Your Relationships

During conflict resolution, effective listening can be especially helpful. It is also helpful in the day-in, and day-out
